Getting started

Joymixa is a live music game where you create the mix yourself. It works on desktop, mobile, and tablet. For privacy we usually recommend the Brave browser, but for the best performance here, we suggest using Google Chrome.

On touchscreens, just tap an instrument to turn it on or off.

💡 Joymixa works in vertical mode, but horizontal view is much more comfortable and optimized.

1. Turn up the volume (gently!)

Before jumping into the beat, check your device or speaker volume.

2. The interface: your mixing desk

Without a controller

When you first open Joymixa, this is what you’ll see:

  2. Left and right effects controls
  3. Current song
  4. Beat grid

  8. Navigation menu

Usually, rhythmic sounds (like drums) are on the left side, while melodies and harmonies are on the right.

👉 But not always—some creators organize their sounds differently.

With a controller

When you connect a game controller, the buttons rearrange for more comfortable use:

  • Left-side sounds move to the top.
  • Right-side sounds group in the center.

3. Your first song

When you start, there’s already a track waiting for you—selected by the Joymixa Crew. Tap any button and the music begins!

  1. Active stems
  2. Beat grid
  3. Playback head — shows where you are in the loop.
  4. See the music's energy. Lower frequencies to the left, higher to the right.

Each song is a seamless loop—no beginning or end. You decide when to jump in or out, at your own pace.

4. Staying on beat

At the bottom, you’ll see the Beat Grid (3)—vertical bars and a bouncing ball that loops endlessly. It marks the song’s rhythm.

  • Each bounce = one beat.
  • Orange bars mark the first beat of each measure (the strong beat).

🎵 To make your mix sound tight, try toggling sounds right when the ball hits one of those colored bars. You can switch anytime, but hitting those beats almost always fits perfectly.

👉 Try it physically: tap your foot with the rhythm—you’ll notice it lands with the bouncing ball.

Pro tip: activating or muting sounds on the first beat always works. And for percussive sounds (not melodies), the middle beat often fits too. Experiment and you’ll feel it!

5. Advanced tip: free triggering

You can trigger sounds more freely, without syncing to the beat:

  • On keyboard: hold Shift while pressing a sound key.
  • With controller or mobile: hold Back and press a button.

This turns off automatic timing—so it’s up to you to stay on beat. It takes a bit of practice, but it’s super fun once you get it!

6. Changing songs

Tap the screen area showing the current song name (with your finger or mouse) to open the song selector.

  • On keyboard: use the ↑ / ↓ arrow keys.
  • With controller: press and release Start.

🎚️ Filters
  • Left stick up: high-pass filter (only treble frequencies).
  • Left stick down: low-pass filter (only bass frequencies).
⏱️ Delay
  • Left stick left: adds a delay effect.
  • While it’s active, move the right stick up to change the repeat speed (1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 — delay time subdivisions).
🌊 Flanger
  • Move the left stick left (delay active), and at the same time move the right stick left — the flanger effect will kick in.
